Lori Sylvester

I have always had a love for art. I love all kinds of art: Landscapes, still lifes, abstracts, and portraits. I started drawing objects and people in elementary school. I did not start painting Until I was in my 40s. I was motivated, at that time, by a house with many empty walls. I would go to galleries and look at the art and say to myself, “I really like this painting. I wonder if I might be able to paint it myself.“ Without any formal instruction, I had no idea where to begin. A portrait artist named DeDe Barr ran an ad in the paper in search of people to paint with her. I joined her class and learned so much. I began to copy the works of great artists for practice. Once I could do that, I found family photos that inspired me and now I paint my memories with oils on canvas. I also paint florals getting inspiration from the Dallas Arboretum and various local nurseries. I am a fan of the impressionists with their emphasis on light and color. I am an avid participant in area art associations and events. Currently I serve as Recording Secretary for the Art Club of McKinney. My art has given me the honor to win several awards, including People's Choice and Best of Show in the Art Club of McKinney’s member shows. One of my paintings was purchased by the Heard Craig Center for the Arts as part of their public art collection. My retirement hobby has become a full-time occupation.
